Golden Thread's Future Array In The World Market!

Due to the emergence of China as an established net importer in the world market, and due environmental reasons, production growth of jute has been predicted. The proportion of jute traded has be estimated to increase from 36 percent of total world production in the years 1998-2000 to 39 percent by the year 2010.

Jute, a truly versatile fiber gifted to man by nature happens to be one of the most valuable natural resource of India. With the growing concern over the damage to the environment that plastic may cause in many a field, jute has served to be the best alternative.

As a natural fiber, it has many advantages over synthetics. Jute handicrafts of India have created a niche the world over. Being biodegradable in nature, that means, that which merges with the soil after sustained used providing nourishment to the soil; this fiber has been recognized as environment friendly.

The reason for the popularity of this golden fiber can be attributed to inherent qualities, like being made of cellulose, on combustion jute does not generate toxic gases, and has high tensile strength, low extensibility, high frictional resistance, and good dimensional stability, which also makes natural a choice for packaging.

Also known as golden fiber, the cheapest of all the natural fibers apart from being used in India as the raw material for making sacks, jute today finds extensive use in the making of handicrafts, textile industrial goods, bags, home furnishing, apparel, carpets and many such products. This acts as a propellant for Indian Industries in the world market.

Traditional jute products occupy a dominant share in both the production and exports. Today as a part of every industry, some useful jute products that are becoming popular in the market are the bags, fashion accessories, garments, footwear, wall hangings, coasters, carpets, durries and mats, hammocks, furnishings and more.

This marvelous fiber cultivated almost exclusively in developing countries of East Asia and in some parts of Latin America, Bangladesh, India, and Thailand account for over 90 percent of world production. Constitutes a low proportion of the value of world trade, and being labor intensive during cultivation and processing, this golden fiber provides livelihood and an important source of food security for many farmer families in Asia.

India is the largest producer of raw jute the world over with a production of fifty percent raw and forty percent finished goods, employing approximately forty million farmers and 0.2 million factory workers. Seventy three out of fifty nine mills are in West Bengal. The state of West Bengal accounts for seventy one percent of production. The states of Bihar and Assam rank second and third respectively.

This golden fiber has traditionally been woven, knotted, and braided by women of Bengal often for domestic storage. Today Bengal continues to be a major producer of goods ranging from plush blended carpets, to decorative tapestries, garden pot hangings, decorative handbags, bedspreads, and more. In fifty villages of the Kaliaganj area in West Dinajpur, the process of coloring, weaving on single looms continues, as the world outside turns once again to this wonderful natural fiber.

Assuming, that weather conditions and yield follow normal patterns, world production has been projected at 2.4 million tons by the year 2010. India has projected to increase dominance of global jute production, by accounting for sixty percent of the world production by the year 2010, compared to fifty eight percent in the past.

Export trend as seen by experts reveals that USA, Belgium, Syria, UK, Turkey had been the five major importing countries for Indian Goods which accounted for about fifty one of the total value. Other five major countries importing from India were Japan, Egypt, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Germany, which account eighteen percent of the total value of exports.

In addition, strengthening demand from China seeks to balance demand. This would have been otherwise with fast decline in consumption and import demand by Pakistan, a traditional importer of fibre. Not only that, but due to Chinese demand, the world market expects to increase the proportion of jute traded, from thirty six percent of total world production to thirty nine percent by the year 2010.

Bangladesh expects to remain the largest net exporting country accounting for over seventy five percent of world trade in aggregated fibers and goods. India, the second largest net exporting country, expects net exports to remain stable at approximately 185000 tons. Sacking and carpet backing are likely to be the main products exported. Exports of fiber are projected to remain at around 250000 tons. The government has also recognized the fact that this important sector of the economy has not been given due importance in the recent past.

However, the Indian government plays an active role in carrying out supportive measures to further enhance the exports trade market. Government plans to meet the growing needs of the country and international buyers, to enhance welfare and well being of farmers, and farm workers. Research and development, technology up gradation, creation of infrastructure for storage and marketing of raw and finished product, and market development, are activities on the agenda.

The Jute Manufacturers Development Council or JMDC supported by three branch offices provides direct assistance and marketing through showrooms, regular exhibitions, and sales all over the country and abroad, and by organizing domestic workshops and seminars. The council also organizes demonstrations and training programs for farmers in improved agriculture practices.

The Jute Corporation of India provides the farmers just and fair prices for crops through price support operations in the event of farmers getting prices below minimum support price. At times, commercial purchases of raw jute for mills directly from farmers or through cooperatives take place.

There are plans to increase exports through innovative marketing strategies, by improving product design and quality, and by developing infrastructure in the predominantly textile and apparel export oriented areas in close co operation with financial institutions and the private sector.

The effort of the government with the UNDP to develop this sector mainly through diversification of jute products seem to have paid off, and the jute industry has taken off to transform from once a sunset industry into now a sunrise industry.
