Are You Setting up Your Blog for Long Term Profit?
It was December of 2004 when I first heard about this new
fad called blogging while reading Fortune magazine. That
month they featured a couple high profile bloggers that
were making very decent money by writing and publishing
articles online. Eyes starry with visions of impending
wealth I grabbed my mouse and within 5 minutes, I had made
the biggest mistake in blogging. The mistake that I made
would end up costing me a fair amount of money and about 4
months of my time and effort.
The big mistake was to start a blog on a free blog hosting
service like Blogspot.com, commonly known as Blogger. Now,
there's nothing wrong with Blogger or the other free
blogging services, it is a very easy to use and massively
popular tool. And the price is certainly right too! The
problem is actually the domain name, which ends up being
something like: yoursite.blogspot.
to earn a bit of money and learned more and more about how
the Internet works, it hit me... I didn't really own my
site! I could never sell it or even move it on to my own
domain without losing all the search engine rankings that
I had worked hard to build up.
Luckily for me it had only been about 4 months that I had
been blogging and I realized that if I was in this for
the long run, the sooner I got my own domain the better.
The first thing I thought was, it was going to be
expensive for me to host my own site. But it really
wasn't nearly as much as I thought. It was under 10
dollars a year for a domain name and I was able to find
hosting for less than 5 dollars a month. I convinced
myself that it would be a good long term business
decision to trade one or two fewer lattes a month and
have real blog than to continue writing on a free
service.
The other fear I had was that setting up my own "real"
blog was going to be difficult and beyond me technically.
While it is true that it is a bit more complex than
filling in a form and hitting "sign up" it is not really
difficult if you are willing to do a bit of reading and
able to follow simple directions. Most hosting companies
have an amazing tool called Fantastico that completely
automates the installation of a WordPress blog. I had
expected this to be the hard part but it actually turned
out to be extremely simple.
All my concerns regarding setting up my own blog had
pretty much dissolved as I ventured off of my free blog
service. Overall, I was glad that I started on Blogger.
There is one thing that free blog services are really good
for and that is they help you figure out if you're really
going to love blogging. I call it "try before you buy"
because some people fall in love with blogging and for
some, they lose interest. So go for it, see if you like it
on a free blog but if you find out you love it and want to
potentially earn some money from blogging, then take the
plunge and spend a few bucks and get a real blog on your
own domain. In the long run your earning potential will be
much higher.
